I tend to be a gift giver. I find great satisfaction in putting in some extra effort to get someone I love a gift that is thoughtful and purposeful! I really do have a little bit too much fun doing it…. And then there is the joyful reaction of the gift receiver which I love equally!
As you can see I have been thinking of gifts recently. Not because my birthday is in a couple months, nope. Maybe it is that we are celebrating Pentecost next week? At times I ask myself: What is the greatest gift I can give? Have you ever asked yourself this question? Well, I don’t mind asking: What is the greatest gift you can give? Then, let’s go a step further: What is the greatest gift you can give to God? I’ll give you a hint: its not very complex.
St Therese of Lisieux once said,
“Love makes time eternal by giving divine value to everything”.
This is one of my favorite quotes, because there is so much substance in this quote and it is from a great saint. In my humble opinion, the greatest gift we can give to God is our time. The greatest thing we can give to anyone is our time. Is that too simple? There is great challenge in this simplicity. Who do you give your time to? Who don’t you? Where do you invest your time? Ultimately, where we spend our time defines where our heart lies, and tells a great part about our lives.
In Matthew 6:21, Jesus says to the people, “for where your treasure lies, there your heart will be also”. Yes this is a reference to money, but much more than that. Money is temporal and will pass at some point, but the time we spend on earth, and HOW we spend our time will live on eternally, as St. Therese of Lisieux points out beautifully.
We have the opportunity to give a divine value to our every day relationships, daily encounters, family etc. We can even give divine value doing the laundry, cleaning the dishes, and spending time with people in need of company.
So again: How do you spend your time? Will you spend it changing lives or building self? Love and giving of our time can change the world, right now and with an opportunity like that what will you choose? Oh and by the way; What time is it?
