This past Monday we celebrated the Baptism of Jesus,
a celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Baptism;
the foundation of our whole Christian life! Holy
Baptism is the door to life in the Spirit and the door
which gives access to all other sacraments. Through
Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of
God. As members of Christ, we are incorporated
into the Church and made sharers in her mission.

The Sacrament of Baptism is God’s most beautiful
gift to all of us, an abundance of grace, anointing,
enlightenment, and a garment of immortality. It is a
bath of rebirth since it buries our sin and gift because
it is received by those who bring nothing to it
on their own. Baptism confers an abundance of
grace even to sinners; anointing for it is royal and
priestly, as those who are anointed, garment for it
covers our shame, enlightenment because it radiates
light, bath because it washes, and seal as it guards
us from all evil. Baptism is the gateway to all the
other sacraments and necessary for our salvation by
its actual reception. It is validly conferred only by
immersion in or pouring of true water on the candidates
head with the proper form of words:

“I baptize
you in the name of the Father and the Son, and
of the Holy Spirit.”

We who have been baptized,
like Christ, have access to the voice of God in the
silence of our hearts. The key is through the Word
of God in the Bible, where God calls us and where
Heaven is “opened” for us as well.

The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated at our parish,
the first Sunday of each month and privately by
appointment. Please call the St. Ann by the Sea rectory
