What a weird week? The Friday before the storm we had our tentative closing meeting for the audit. Thank goodness we did pretty respectable and after our formal closing meeting I will be able to share the results with the Finance Council on March 31st. The following day and Saturday we lost one side of the chapel roof and a portion of the church roof on the rectory side. This past Tuesday the roofers arrived and repaired the church roof and worked on the chapel roof. The good news from this situation is that we now know that these two portions of the roof are more susceptible to storms. This is how we are addressing this issue. You will notice that the roofers have installed an ice shield across the chapel roof…essentially a double layer of protection preventing any leaks into the chapel during storms. The roofers are also applying a glue along with nails to the chapel roof. The church roof was already sealed with glue, which is why it fared much better in the 90mph winds. As we enter Spring and as the sun comes closer, the shingles are going to bake (‘so to speak’) and the seal on the shingles will be much stronger. I expect that this will address our long term needs for the roof. Also we have insurance, and they are picking up the tab for those repairs. The next roof to be installed will be the rectory and that will be during the late Spring/early Summer which will afford the new shingles time to seal, and we will make sure we build into the job specifications for it to withstand such sustained winds. The sign will be repaired in the coming month and we will soon remove the tree by the chapel and replace it with a similar mature pine tree. Interestingly enough, the church and rectory always lose power in these storms, though in this winter hurricane we never lost our electricity.

I and the Spiritual Development Committee are trying to reschedule the Lenten Mission with a modified program. A Parish Penance Service will be on Wednesday of Holy Week with an outside priest and myself.

Thanks for the tremendous Almsgiving response for Veterans. Next week we will share the totals of socks and toothpaste etc. (yup, we counted them cause there was so much). This week our Almsgiving program features the 2018 CATHOLIC APPEAL. We will watch a six minute video presentation followed by an ‘in pew’ solicitation. Everyone, regardless of whether you make a pledge or not is asked to fill out one of these pledge cards. Last year we received rebates of $17,598.25 because we exceeded our financial goal and the goal for number of ‘in pew’ cards submitted. By the way, the bathroom renovation is complete and was funded by a portion of this rebate!

Next weekend we will be selling IRISH BREAD for St. Patrick’s Day. The following Saturday the parish based Knights of Columbus will be holding its annual Spaghetti Dinner at 5:00pm in the parish Hall. Hope to see you.

Just a reminder that we have placed EASTER FLOWER ENVELOPES at each exit; please consider making a donation in memory of a loved one. Thanks for the help.
