This week we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus, a celebration of the Sacrament Holy Baptism, the basis of
our whole Christian life! Holy Baptism is the door to life in the Spirit and the door which gives access to
other sacraments. Through the sacrament we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God. As members of
Christ, we are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission.
I baptize you in the name of the Father and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Baptism is God’s most beautiful gift to all of us, an abundance of grace, anointing, enlightenment, and a
garment of immortality and bath of rebirth. It is a gift because it is conferred on those who bring nothing to
it on their own, grace since it is given even to sinners; Baptism because sin is buried in the water, anointing
for it is royal and priestly as those who are anointed, garment for it covers our shame, enlightenment because
it radiates light, bath because it washes, and seal as it guards us from all evil and is a sign of God’s Lordship.
Baptism is the gateway to the other sacraments and necessary for our salvation by actual reception. It is
validly conferred only by immersion in or pouring of true water on the candidates head with the proper form
of words: “I baptize you in the name of the Father and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated at our parish, the first Sunday of each month and privately by appointment. Please call the St. Ann by the Sea rectory @ 781-834-4953 for more information.
